Theme and Scope: To address the environmental problems due to petroleum contamination of soils, sediments and water and to keep up-to-date with technical developments employed in the treatment of contamination by the international user communities.

Aim: The aim of the Congress is to focus world attention, and to foster multidisciplinary discussion and debate, on the environmental consequences resulting from petroleum contamination of soils, sediments and water and to identify effective approaches and technologies for mitigation and clean up.

Objectives:

  1. To present an overview of updated information on sources and levels of petroleum contamination of soils, sediments and water on a global scale.

  2. To discuss potential environmental hazards resulting from petroleum contaminated soils, sediments and water.

  3. To demonstrate analytical techniques and assessment methodologies for determination of environmental fate and effects of petroleum contamination in soils, sediments and water.

  4. To highlight recent technologies for remediation, rehabilitation and pollution prevention of petroleum contamination.

  5. To identify means of international cooperation in combating petroleum contamination of soils, sediments and water.

General Topics:

Contributed Papers and Posters are invited for presentation in the following areas:

  • Analytical methodologies - laboratory and field
  • Clean-up technologies for marine and coastal oil spills
  • Compensatory determination for crude oil and hydrocarbon contamination
  • Cross-country comparison of contamination standard, and standard-setting approaches
  • Ecological impact and risk assessment
  • Environmental fate and modeling
  • Environmental forensics
  • Environmental issues for production water from production activities
  • Fuel additives and oxygenates
  • GIS application
  • Human risk and health analysis
  • Innovative technologies
  • International comparison of contamination regulations and policies
  • International laws and cooperation issues on contamination monitoring and clean-up
  • International clean-up technology transfer and issues
  • Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) of marine and terrestrial contamination
  • Pollution minimization and prevention techniques for production, processing, transportation and storage
  • Remediation technologies: bioremediation, chemical extraction, composting, phytoremediation, stabilization, etc.
  • Risk-based clean-ups (RBCA)
  • Site assessment/field sampling
  • Soil chemistry
  • Sources and levels of crude oil and hydrocarbon contamination
  • Case studies of above related subjects

Participants: Oil Industry and government professionals and decision-makers, academic and regulatory scientists, consultants and other professionals responsible for the assessment and remediation of petroleum contaminated soils, sediments and water.

Format: The format will be comprised of sessions which will include platform presentations and technical posters, an exhibition section and focused workshops. Highlighted activities such as keynote speakers, roundtable discussions and luncheon presentations will also be included. Social events such as a banquet will be scheduled to encourage informal dialogue amongst participants.

Invited Keynote Speakers: Internationally renowned speakers and specialists will be selected to give keynote addresses on various topics of the Congress.

Publication of the Congress Proceedings: Papers presented at the Congress will be edited and published as a hard cover book by Amherst Scientific Publishers. Papers will also be considered for publication in the offical AEHS peer-reviewed publications, Journal of Soil and Sediment Contamination, The International Journal of Environmental Forensics, The International Journal of Phytoremediation, and Human and Ecological Risk Assessment. Copies of the hard cover proceedings will be printed and distributed to the Congress attendees, libraries and professionals around the world.
